Second PPG Conference Swells with Southern Texan Hospitality

ppg_conference_09_group.jpg The 2009 Project Professionals Group conference, which began last week, gave sponsors and special guest speakers the opportunity to speak about the Port of Corpus Christi's infrastructure and promote the local economy by appealing to shippers from around the world. 110 freight movers, ship owners and related industry companies from 45 countries converged in Corpus Christi for the five-day event. The event was officially opened by The Mayor of Corpus Christi, Mr. Joe Adame.

Participants discussed the most effective ways of moving complex, unconventional cargo and materials across the globe. Examples of unconventional cargo includes wind turbine parts, which the Corpus Christi Port has been receiving in recent years. The conference also brought together many companies who also might be handling the movement of equipment for proposed multimillion-dollar projects, such as Las Brisas Energy Center and the San Patricio County pipe manufacturing plant proposed by TPCO, said port chairman, Mr. John La Rue. "Odds are very high to have additional companies arriving to our port in the near future," Mr. LaRue said. "Already, heavy-lift vessels' owners who attended have discharged special cargoes in this port." The conference was the first by PPG to be held in the United States. It helped pump over US$300,000 into the local economy, port officials estimated.

2009_conference_group_mayor.jpg During the PPG Conference proper on Thursday 30th July, presentations were made by Rickmers-Linie GmbH; Beluga Chartering GmbH; Sun Communications; Chipolbrok; The Port of Corpus Christi Authority; Scan-Trans; Tradelossa (Transportes De Los Santos); Sinokor Merchant Marine/YJC; Sea-Concert; and SmartWay Transporation Partnership. Other sponsors and attendees in attendance were Quebec Stevedoring; Heavy Lift & Project Forwarding International, Roanoke Trade; DIX Fairway Terminals; DIX Shipping; Ceres Consulting; Sahil Express; and TransProject LLC.

From the inaugural PPG-Sahil golf tournament and official TransProject LLC cocktails opening on Wednesday 29th; the PPG beach party on Thursday 30th July (with live Rock Band); and the port tour and Port of Corpus Christi ranch visit on Friday 31st July (complete with live Country & Western bands), everybody seemed to have a great time where old friendships were renewed, new business and personal relationships established, all of which will hold us in good stead for the long term future.

Due to the generous sponsorship offered by the Port of Antwerp, Belgium has been chosen to host the PPG 2010 conference. Local PPG host member will be Polytra, Belgium. Further details and dates will be released shortly.
